Burrum Biodynamics is a family-run certified biodynamic farm located in Burrum, Queensland, Australia. We grow organic lentils, spelt, and ancient grains using biodynamic and regenerative farming practices that put the health of the soil — and the food — first.
We are certified by Demeter Australia (No. 729), the world's most rigorous biodynamic standard. This means everything we grow is produced without synthetic chemicals, water-soluble fertilizers, or GMOs — and with a deep respect for the living ecosystem of our farm.
Our mission is simple: to grow exceptionally clean food in a way that improves the land it's grown on, year after year.

How We Farm
Our Farming Principles
Biodynamic farming goes beyond organic. It's a holistic approach that views the farm as a living organism — where every element works together to create health, fertility, and abundance.
Biodynamic Preparations
We apply Demeter-approved BD preparations (BD500–BD508) — composted herbal, mineral and manure preparations that stimulate soil biology, enhance nutrient uptake, and activate the farm's immune system.
Multi-Species Cover Crops
Diverse cover crop blends are the cornerstone of our fertility management. They fix nitrogen, suppress weeds naturally, attract beneficial insects, and build organic matter in the soil.
Minimum Tillage
We disturb the soil as little as possible to preserve fungal networks, earthworm populations, and the delicate soil structure that supports all life on the farm.
Zero Synthetic Inputs
No synthetic fertilizers. No herbicides or pesticides. No water-soluble nutrients. Every input to our farm is either natural or certified biodynamic.
Cosmic & Lunar Rhythms
We plant, cultivate, and harvest according to biodynamic calendar — working with lunar phases and planetary rhythms that influence plant growth and vitality.

Demeter International is the world's oldest and most rigorous ecological certification standard — predating organic certification by decades. Achieving and maintaining Demeter certification means our farm is inspected annually against strict criteria that go far beyond organic.
Demeter certification requires not only that we avoid all synthetic inputs, but that we actively work to create a self-sustaining farm ecosystem. It's the gold standard for clean, genuinely sustainable food production.

The Farm Story
Our Journey to
Biodynamic Farming
Steve's transition to biodynamic farming began in the early 2000s, driven by a deep concern about the long-term health of the land and the quality of the food being grown on it. After researching Rudolf Steiner's agricultural lectures and connecting with Demeter Australia, the transformation of the farm began.
The journey wasn't easy — rebuilding soil biology after years of conventional inputs takes patience, observation, and a willingness to trust natural systems. But the results have been extraordinary: richer soils, more resilient crops, and food with a depth of flavour that simply can't be replicated with chemicals.
Today, Burrum Biodynamics is a thriving certified farm producing some of Australia's finest organic lentils and ancient grains — and a testament to what's possible when you work with nature, not against it.
